Bharti Airtel Chairman Sunil Mittal called upon the need to set a reasonable base price for 3G spectrum auctions by the government in the country so as to ensure a decent number of bids from industry players.
"From my point of view, put a reasonable base price and then float the bidding. Don''t make it too high," said Sunil Mittal in an interview with CNBC TV18. "Most of the existing players would like 3G to come through. ... let the price be discovered in the market," he added.
3G in India has been put on hold for the last few years for varied reasons. The latest delay is on account of a group of ministers who have to take a final call on the 3G policy guidelines. DoT has involved other ministries and government agencies so as to avoid direct blame for any controversial decision as it faced for its 2G policy decisions.
Earlier late last year, the Finance Ministry had proposed doubling the base price of 3G and broadband wireless access spectrum on account of perceived low participation from foreign players. The Finance ministry wanted to ensure that the government does not loses out on any revenue generation from the spectrum auctioning. |
