Google takes on Skype-type service providers with launch of phone call services over Gmail

Internet giant, Google is taking on VoIP service providers such as Skype with the launch of a new phone call service to be offered over Gmail.

The new service launch adds up to the company’s offerings that include voice and video chat services. The phone call service includes home phones as well as mobile phone sin the USA and Canada. Calls within these countries will be for free. Calls to other countries including UK, France, Germany, China and Japan will be charged 2 cents per minute.

According to Google, making a call through its service works like a normal phone in that a user could click on the "call phone" option in their chat buddy list in Gmail and type in the number or enter a contact's name.

Users need to have online account linked to a credit card.
