BlackBerry Curve 9220 Review

Why to buy:

It is simple, attractive and classy low weight phone. Its memory space is good and works on the latest 7.1 BlackBerry Operating System.

Why to avoid:

It has poor camera quality, with no flash and secondary camera. RAM is also slow and delays browsing.

Our Take:

Curve 9220 is an impressive phone with all basic and advance features and applications. But camera, RAM and processor are its weak points.

Rating:

Price: Rs. 10, 990

Detailed Review

Design:

The BlackBerry Curve 9220 is a slim design phone mostly used by professionals. The shiny glossy plastic body is attractive and it has a class QWERTY keypad as its predecessor’s curve series has. It weights just 102 gm with 109mm, 60mm and 12.7 mm as its dimensions. There is a dedicated BBM (BlackBerry Messenger) key on its left with a USB port above it. To lock the screen you have a dedicated key on the middle of its top with a 3.5 mm earjack on its side. The right side has volume controls and a dedicated camera key. And the bottom of this phone has a speaker and mouthpiece. To help you navigate through the phone there is a sensitive touch optical trackpad. It has a transmissive TFT LCD screen with 2.44 inches screen size and gives you 320 x 240 pixels colours display. The curvy sides of the phone are made with strong grip scratch resistant rubber which gives you comfortable hold in hand.

Interface/OS:

The curve 9220 runs on BlackBerry 7.1 Operating System. It has a 806 MHz processor and 512 MB of RAM to support the operation.

Camera:

The BlackBerry supports a 2 megapixels camera with 5 X digital zoom and it gives you 1600 x 1200 pixels image resolution. Amazingly, this not so good camera also allows you video recording. It does not even have a front camera. But we can say that the camera quality is good and it gives you clear picture. However, among its competitors in this price range, you can get 5 megapixels camera with flash and more camera functionality.

Memory:

With BlackBerry Curve 9220 you get 512 MB of inbuilt memory space and up to 32 GB expandable memory. This is where it has an edge over its competitors.

Audio/Video:

The Curve 9220 gives an awesome sound quality both on headset and loud speaker. When tested, the call quality was superb and even my voice to the caller was sharp and clear. The video quality is superb in this screen size and it supports .mp4, .m4a, .3gp, .3gp2, .m4v, .avi, .asf, .wmv and .wma video formats. The video quality of downloaded videos is great, whereas the videos shoot from the mobile delivers poor picture resolution. The music player supports mp4, .m4a, .3pg, .3gp2, .m4v, .avi, .asf, .mp3, .wmv, .wma, .flac, .ogg, .aac, .amr, .wav and .mid audio formats.

Battery:

BlackBerry Curve 9220 comes with 1450 mAh Li-Ion battery. When tested, battery delivered up to 6 hours and 30 minutes of talk time and it delivered up to 15 days of standby time. The music playback time is up to 25 hours with and without headset usage.

Features/Applications:

The BlackBerry Curve 9220 comes loaded with all social apps like, Facebook, Twitter, you tube and many more. BlackBerry Messenger Service (BBM), blackberry App world, Maps, Social Feeds with Wi-Fi connectivity gives you all that you can think of in this price range. The browser offers multiple window access and is easy to use. It is available in Black, Pure white, Pink, Red and Teal Blue colours. SMS, MMS, Email, Push Email and Instant Messaging are multiple messaging options available for you. The stereo FM radio in-built can be played both on headset and speaker mode. And all other basic features like organizer, document viewer, memo pad, files, calculator, etc. are all inherited in it. The voice calling/dialing, voice notes are some important features you will notice in this phone. Multitasking and swapping applications are fast and easy with its 806 MHz processor and 512 MB RAM.

Conclusion:

The BlackBerry Curve 9220 is a stylish phone in slim design and glossy body. The BBM services as always are at its best. Instant Messaging, BlackBerry App world and many such applications do justice to this new Curve series phone. But its weak camera and functionalities with slow 512 MB RAM come in its way to claim clear lead over other competing phones. So, we give this phone three star rating.
