Review: Samsung Galaxy Ace Duos - Double enjoyment

Why to buy:

The Samsung Galaxy Ace offers dual sim support, Android 2.3 gingerbread and has come up with more and rich features. It has long battery life.

Why to avoid:

The Ace Duos, like its predecessor, offers a weak 838 MHz processor and the 5 megapixels camera comes without LED flash.

Our Take:

This is much better phone than Samsung’s own Galaxy Ace. At a price of Rs 12,100, it is a good buy if you can compromise on weak processor.

Detailed Review

Design:

The Samsung Galaxy Ace Duos, as the name says, is a Dual sim supporting phone with some better and advanced functions. It is reasonably priced at Rs. 12,100 and is a new addition in the Samsung Galaxy’s Ace family. Its screen size is 3.5 inches and it comes with TFT technology, capacitive multi touch touchscreen. The dimensions of Galaxy Ace Duos are 112.7mm, 61.50mm and 11.5mm in height, width and depth and it weights 122 gm. the body is plastic material with aluminum curve ring. Ace Duos comes with less dedicated keys, on the right side it has a power/lock key and the left side hold the volume control key. On the top, it has a 3.5 mm earjack and the USB port for charging and Connectivity is on the bottom. Below the screen is a physical Home key with Back and Menu Capacitive touch keys. Above its screen is proximity sensor next to the earpiece. But, Galaxy Ace Duos lacks with a dedicated camera key and a front camera too. The design of Galaxy Ace Duos is simple and attractive.

Interface/Operating System:

The Samsung Galaxy Ace Duos runs on Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system. It comes with a single core 832 MHz processor and it has 512 MB RAM. This android version is well supported with this phone unlike Galaxy Ace lacks with its processor and slower RAM. However, there are many phones in this segment which offers at least 1 GHz processor.

Camera:

Samsung Galaxy Ace Duos has a 5 megapixels camera with auto focus but it does not have LED flash. Ace Duos does not have a front facing camera and can be depressing for video call lovers. Though the camera embedded in the devise is fine and image quality is good too but with proper lights. Camera captures video too but with VGA effects at 30 frames per second. This Galaxy Ace camera offers multiple shot mode, photo effects and white balance options. The speed is not that quick because of its slow processor and the on board memory space is less too. The overall camera work is good but is limited because of technicalities.

Audio/Video:

The Samsung Galaxy Ace Duos in-built has its own Touch Wiz music player. The same music player exists in all galaxy phones and the sound quality is not compromised. It has the DNSe sound enhancing sound technology and equalizer presets but lacks with 5.1 channel virtualization. The audio quality with the headphones is really good but when on loudspeaker mode the quality falls down. In-built Stereo FM with RDS is best enjoyed with headphones on and can be enjoyed in loudspeaker mode too. The video player embedded in Galaxy ace is simple and easy to operate. But, it gives low resolution to video captures. It supports 3GP and MP4 video formats and the plays video up to WVGA resolution. The videos recorded or downloaded can be played with the video player and they can be transferred to you TV or computer too.

Memory:

Galaxy Ace from Samsung offers in-built 3 GB memory space, which is better than its other Galaxy series. Through micro SD card, it is expandable up to 32 GB. SMS and phone book entries depend on the availability of memory space in the phone.

Features:

The Samsung Galaxy Ace Duos is a high mid range Android phone and is filled with lot many android features such as aGPS, Google Maps, MMS, instant messaging, e-mail and personal organizer. There are in-built options like: Wi-Fi (to enjoy wireless network), Bluetooth 2.1(to share data, photos, videos, etc. with other devices), USB 2.0(to connect you device with TV or Computer/Laptop), 3.5 mm audio jack (to enjoy music, Radio and Videos), the much hyped ChatOn service (enables single and multi-person conversations, multimedia file sharing and even more) and Samsung Kies Air (that help you syncing data with your PC/Laptop). Samsung Galaxy Ace Duos has many options pre installed for browsing Internet. These include Layer reality browser, android browser, GPRS, EDGE, 3G and HSDPA 7.2 MBPS.

It supports Quadband GSM (850, 900, 1800 and 1900) 2G Network and Dual band (900 and 2100) 3G Network. Facebook, Twitter and You tube is embedded in it and the social hub offers a fully incorporated one page layout of phone book, IM, e-mail and SNS. Galaxy Ace also features Quicktype by SWYPE that helps in quick typing and sense what you want to type. Think Free is also another good feature in this phone that allows you to create, edit and view Microsoft word, Excel and PowerPoint documents. Voice search is also available in this phone. Overall, it has good features that you can enjoy but this Phone has limitations because of its Android version.

Battery:

Samsung Galaxy Ace Duos is power packed with standard Li-Ion 1300 mAh battery, which has done justice to this device. It delivers the stand by time up to 550 hours on 2G and up to 390 hours on 3G. The Talk Time delivered is also impressive which is up to 13 hours on 2G and up to 6 hours on 3G.

Conclusion:

The Samsung Galaxy Ace Duos is a good phone in this price range. The 3.5 inch screen size is attractive, the 5 mega pixels camera works well, the battery life is good and the features embedded are better and abundant. But there are few options that this phone is missing such as: front camera, HD video resolution, etc. overall We give it 3 star rating.
