Technology | | BrowserCalls releases first HTML 5 supported softphone | | TT Correspondent | | 06 Nov 2013 | | | BrowserCalls has said that it is the first VoIP provider that fully supports HTML 5 based VoIP (Voice over IP) communication. It said that customers can now use 'BrowserCalls' directly in the Google Chrome and Mozilla FireFox browsers.
HTML5 dialers will be integrated into the BrowserCalls website and will run inside (mobile) browsers. This means that, unlike apps built specifically for Apple or Android devices, it does not need to be developed seperately for each operating system. Perhaps, the most important promise is that it can be "write once, run anywhere."
It said that users only need a headset, or speakers and a microphone, and one of the supported browsers. Most engineers are still waiting for the realease of Microsoft's Internet Explorer 11 and Apple's Safari both of which support HTML 5. However, FireFox and Chrome already come with default support for WebRTC (Web Real-Time Communications), a new JavaScript API that enables real-time communication, and thus VoIP traffic.
This means BrowserCalls can already serve almost 40% of all desktop users, because it offers the dialer for users of both FireFox (worldwide market share of 18.8%) and Chrome (16.0%). In many countries Google Chrome has an even larger market share, which means that a greater percentage of people has access to BrowserCalls. |
