Govt to come out with new “digital process” for issuing SIM cards
TT Correspondent |  |  20 Oct 2018

The government is working on a new process to issue mobile SIM cards in a hassle-free manner after the Supreme Court prohibited telecom companies from using the Aadhaar-based e-KYC authentication process.

Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) and the telecom department said in a joint statement that the government will come out with a new “digital process” for issuing SIM cards by making use of a mobile app which will be fully compliant with the apex court judgment. “In the proposed process, live photograph of the person with latitude, longitude, and time stamp will be captured. The SIM card agent will be authenticated through OTP and SIM card will be issued. This process will be completely hassle-free and digital,” the two said in a statement.

The statement also said if anybody wishes to get their Aadhaar eKYC replaced by a fresh KYC in light of the apex court’s verdict, the individual may request the service provider for delinking the same by submitting fresh OVDs (official valid documents). “But in any case, the individual’s mobile number will not be disconnected.”

The telecom players also said that if a customer wishes to de-link their Aadhaar number from the existing mobile connection, they may do so by contacting their operator and providing alternate documents prescribed as per telecom ministry’s guidelines.
