About 50.16 million subscribers have opted for mobile number portability (MNP) b y the end of May 2012, according to the latest figures released by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India.
In MNP Zone-I (Northern & Western India) maximum number of requests have been received in Rajasthan(4.62 million) followed by Gujarat (4.58 million) whereas in MNP Zone-II (Southern & Eastern) maximum number of requests have been received in Karnataka (5.82 million) followed by Andhra Pradesh Service area (4.81million). In the month of May 2012, total number of subscribers who have submitted their request for MNP is 4.27 million.
The mobile subscriber base increased from 921.02 million in April 2012 to 929.37 million at the end of May 2012, registering a growth of 0.91%. The share of urban mobile subscribers has decreased from 64.54 % to 64.24% where as share of rural wireless subscribers has increased from 35.46% to 35.76%. The mobile tele density in India reaches 76.68.
Mobile subscription in Urban areas increased from 594.45 million in April 2012 to 596.98 million at the end of May 2012. The wireless subscription in Rural Areas increased from 326.57 million to 332.38 million during the same period. This shows higher growth in Rural wireless subscription (1.78%) than Urban wireless subscription (0.43%). The urban mobile teledensity has increased from 162.15 to 162.57 and rural teledensity has increased from 38.69 to 39.35.
The number of telephone subscribers in India increased to 960.90 million at the end of May, 2012from 952.91 million at the end of April 2012, thereby registering a growth rate of 0.84%. The share of Urban subscribers has declined to 64.65% from 64.95% whereas share of rural subscribers has increased to 35.35% in the month of May 2012. With this, the overall Tele-density in India reaches to 79.28 at the end of May, 2012 from 78.71 of the previous month. 3 Subscription in Urban Areas increased from 618.92 million in April, 2012 to 621.21 million at the end of May, 2012.
Subscription in Rural Areas increased from 334.00 million to 339.69 million during the same period. The growth rate of Urban and Rural Subscription is 0.37% and 1.71% respectively. The overall Urban Teledensity has increased from 168.83 to 169.17 and Rural Teledensity increased from 39.57 to 40.21.
Bharti Airtel added the most over 2 million subscribers, taking its subscriber base to 185.3 million at the end of May. Idea Cellular saw the second highest addition at 1.75 million users in the month.
Uninor retained third position by adding over 1.52 million users. Vodafone regained its fourth position in terms of new subscribers addition by adding 1.2 million users. Aircel, Reliance Communications, Sistema Shyam added over 0.8 million, 0.5 million and 0.25 million users respectively.
State owned BSNL and MTNL continued to lose subscribers in May. BSNL lost 81,000 and MTNL 0.17 million users in May. In April, BSNL and MTNL lost around 0.71 million and 0.1 million users respectively from their network. BSNL and MTNL's total subscriber base stood at 97.71 million and 5.55 million, respectively.
