The Union Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal in a meeting with the representatives of the social networking sites on Thursday has emphasized on the constructive approach of these sites to empower the masses.
Sources said that the meeting was an extension to the government’s proposed move to screen the offensive content before they are put online. Thursday’s meeting is an effort to build a consensus with the operators to evolve a mechanism before a code of conduct is enforced.
Sibal is reported to have told the representatives of these social media sites that they should resist the temptation of converting these sites into a space for the elite only. He told them that India is a huge country and the marginalized people have the same right to use the internet content as the rich ones.
The representatives of these sites are believed to have told Sibal that they are in favour of an independent monitoring body to keep a check on the content.
In a press conference a few days back Sibal had raised the issue of the offensive and objectionable content being posted on these sites. He said that there should a mechanism in the form of a code of conduct so that people or religion against whom the content is posted don’ feel hurt. |
