Govt asks BlackBerry maker RIM to install servers in India or face closure of service
TT Correspondent |  New Delhi |  23 Aug 2010

The Indian government has notified Research in Motion (RIM) to install servers in the country to enable tracking of the services by security agencies and has notified the Canadian firm that any failure to do so will lead to closure of the services.

Earlier RIM had offered to provide partial access to its chat services. However the company was reluctant to provide access to its enterprise email services citing compromise on the privacy clause entered into with its subscribers. The government’s deadline to RIM was till August 31, 2010.

Another alternative solution offered by RIM included handing over details of BlackBerry phones on specific request on case-to-case basis. It had agreed to provide information manually or through a non-human interface using the cloud environment.

The Indian security agencies are pressing for a real-time access to BlackBerry communication system.
