Even though BlackBerry has got a 60-days lease of life in India, the government is serious about finding a solution for intercepting Enterprise emails. Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram has said that India wants access to the BlackBerry server after the 60 days grace period. He said if Research in Motion (RIM) can offer access in other countries then why not India.
In an interview to a leading TV news channel, CNBC-TV 18, the Home Minister said it is the security over privacy in BlackBerry case. He said the 60-day deadline isn't far away.
“We are standing firm and we expect them to give access. If they have earned 60 days trial period so be it. If we are convinced that they are insurmountable then we will accept that. But only if we are convince that they are not insurmountable. If they have offered access in some other jurisdiction certainly we are entitled to have same access too,” said Chidambaram.
About two years ago, Research In Motion (RIM), the company that owns BlackBerry, was given an ultimatum. However, later the government did not take any action. Some industry observers believe that the government may not take any action now. |
