Reliance Communications, in its aim to enhance the VAS offerings to its subscribers, is all set to introduce 35 new live streaming channels to its GSM subscribers. This will be in addition to 13 channels offered by the firm to CDMA subscribers.

While the company is terming it has part of mobile TV offerings, technically it is not possible since transmission of mobile TV requires 3G as backbone. Such services offered in India are effectively live streaming services wherein video content is transmitted through progressive streaming techniques as is the practice in the online medium. Progressive streaming is used in popular video sites like YouTube and it involves the buffering as well as streaming at the time albeit to a short delay between each of them.

Coming back to RCom’s initiative, the company has tied-up with Hyderabad-based Apalya Technologies for the services. The services are branded as MimobiTV. Apalya is also into tie-up with BSNL for similar offerings and the services are offered as part of BSNL’s 3G services bouquet.

Krishna Durbha, Head (VAS) RCom said, “We are in advanced talks with Apalya. The tie-up would help us increase the width of the usage.”

The development marks second consecutive day, when RCom has pitched the voice of its VAS offerings. A day earlier, it introduced a sachet pricing model to drive uptake of its VAS offerings.
