TT Correspondent |  |  13 May 2011

Telco giant ZTE Thursday announced the successful trial of South Asia’s first LTE (Long Term Evolution) Infrastructure, in partnership with Sri Lanka’s National Mobile Services Provider, Mobitel. The trial system will feature a peak bit rate speed of up to 96 Mbps and incorporate LTE services such as HD streaming media play, file upload and download, as well as web browsing.

Mobitel chose to deploy ZTE’s advanced Uni RAN + Uni Core solutions as well as the 2600M frequency LTE indoor coverage system to deploy the LTE test network in the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo.

“As the National Mobile Telecom Services Provider we are committed to take every initiative towards developing our nation through the use of ICT,” said Mr. Suren J. Amarasekera, CEO Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel.

“ZTE is pleased to cooperate with Mobitel, and we congratulate Mobitel on becoming the first operator in South Asia to trial LTE infrastructure and commit to launch an LTE capable network,” said Fu Daliang, CEO ZTE Sri Lanka.

Srilanka is always ahead of India as far as adopting technology is concerned. However with RIL's Infotel coming next year (2012) with LTE, who has pan India BWA license, is surely going to make a big splash in the Indian Internet market. With 100Mbps speed on 4G / LTE, 3G would be passé.
