Congress distances itself from Digvijay's remarks favouring bail for 2G, CWG undertrials
TT Correspondent |  |  29 Oct 2011

Perturbed by its its senior leader Digvijay Singh’s remark favouring bail for  2G and CWG undertrials, Congress on Friday distanced itself from him saying that it was his personal remarks.

Digvijay Singh on Thursday said tha courts should not keep undertrials in lock up. Reacting to this Congress said it was his personal opinion and it does not feel the need to comment on judicial proceedings or on every remark of "others".

Congress leaders speaking privately said the party feels it is "irrelevant" to draw any analogy between Rajat Gupta case, cited by Digvijay, and cases like 2G scam and CWG. "It is his opinion. Ask him about it. We do not feel the need to comment on it. Congress party does not feel the need to comment on any judicial and legal process. Nor it does it feel the need to give remarks about any individual case. I do not see any reason for the Congress to comment on every remark of others," party spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said responding to a volley of questions on Singh's remarks.

Earlier in the day, the AICC general secretary cited the case of former Goldman Sachs director Rajat Gupta in the US and made a strong pitch for release on bail of all accused who have been chargesheeted after completion of probe. Singh's assertion came in the backdrop of former Telecom Minister A Raja, DMK MP Kanimozhi and Congress MP Suresh Kalmadi languishing behind bars in corruption cases like 2G and Commonwealth Games, but Singh stressed he was not taking any names.
