Seeking to resolve the problem of connectivity in Naxal-affected districts, government on Wednesday decided to set up telecommunication towers by creating high security zones in such areas.
On the eve of his four-day visit to five left-wing extremism-hit disticts --four in Chattisgarh and one in Andhra Pradesh, Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh told reporters here that the move is to reach out to the tribals in remote areas through various governnmental schemes as part of efforts to tackle the left-wing extremism.
He said the "single biggest problem in all these districts is connectivity. There is no connectivity in remote areas of almost all tribal districts".
Jairam said telecommunication towers will be set up in high security areas such as CRPF camps, police headquarters and collectorates in such districts.
The minister also referred to the incidents of Naxals targeting BSNL towers set up in the hill top of tribal-dominated districts.
Jairam said he discussed the issue today with the Communication Ministry officials today and the government decided to go ahead with its plan.
During his four-day visit, the minister will be covering the districts of Dantewada, Narainpur, Bijaipur in Chhattisgarh and Vishakapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. |
