In a major victory to the Janata Party chief Subramanian Swamy and lawyer and social activist Prashant Bhushan, the Supreme Court on Thursday cancelled all 122 spectrum licences granted after January 2008 causing massive embarrassment to the UPA government.
The apex court also said that the trial court could decide whether to probe the home minister P Chidambaram’s role in the 2G spectrum allocation case.
Swamy has all along been gunning for Chidambaram for latter’s alleged role for being a party to former telecom minister A Raja’s decision on spectrum pricing.
Prashant Bhushan had also filed two petitions in the apex court seeking the cancellation of the 2G licences and setting up of an SIT to monitor the biggest scam in independent India. It may be recalled that the ruling alliance recently had attacked Prshant Bhushan for selectively attacking the congress leader.
The contention of the Subramanian Swamy is that Chidambaram as the then finance minister could have prevented Raja to sell spectrum at much lesser price to the companies he favored.
Justices Singhvi and Ganguly on Tuesday had ruled that Swamy could seek the prosecution of Raja for the 2G scam. |
