Be prepared to pay more, if new competition is forced to leave: Uninor
TT Correspondent |  |  08 Feb 2012

In an obvious reference to the Supreme Court’s verdict canceling 122 spectrum licences, Uninor owned by Norway’s state owned telecom firm Telenor has on Wednesday warned that if new competition is forced to leave then the customers in Bengluru should be prepared to pay more live the counterparts in Delhi.

Meanwhile putting to rest all the speculation about its withdrawing from the India market the Uninor has reiterated that it is here to win. “We did not come to India to give up”, it said.

Uninor is one of the companies whose licences are set to be cancelled following the apex court’s order last Thursday. The Telenor Group has invested INR 6135.63 crores through new shares to hold 67.25% majority stake in the company.

“Even if you are not a Uninor customer today, you have benefitted from us.  Because of new competition from us and others, every operator has been forced to make tariffs affordable. However, if new competition is asked to leave the market, Bangalore should be prepared for the same high tariffs as Delhi has today", said Uninor Managing Director and Telenor's Asia head Sigve Brekke.

Uninor said that it forced other players to bring down the tariff and make the services affordable. “Customer in Delhi today pays upto 60% higher tariffs for the same services as compared to a customer in Bangalore. Delhi, ofcourse, does not have a single new operator competing in the market”, the company said in a statement.

It said that it has responded to the Supreme Court ruling by adding 3 lac customers in one weekend which is the highest weekend subscriber addition ever for Uninor.

Since the launch of its services, Uninor has competed successfully in all its commercial circles, adding more subscriber than any other mobile operator in India in 2011. In Karnataka, 8.5 lac customers chose Uninor last year, more than many established operators in the state.

The company holds a pan-India UAS license to offer mobile telephony services in each of India’s 22 circles. It has also received spectrum to roll out these services in 21 of the 22 circles. At present, Uninor services are available in the thirteen circles of UP (West), UP (East), Bihar, Orissa, Kolkata, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Mumbai, Maharashtra and Gujarat.
