In a move to empower the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) the Telecom Commission has approved more powers to the former. This means that it can now act like a civil court.
With new powers the regulator can ''summon persons, examine them on oath, demand documents and evidence on affidavits and, in appropriate cases, call for expert assistance in conducting inquiries, according to a report published in The Economic Times.
Trai has been insisting that it should be given more powers but its demands failed to find favor with the former telecom ministers A Raja and Dayanidhi Maran.
It is believed that that new powers that the regulator is going to acquire will find mention in the National Telecom Policy 2012. Telecom Commission’s decision to grant to more powers to Trai is inspired by the fact that the regulator needs additional powers to discharge its duties. |
