New telecom policy likely in May-Kapil Sibal
TT Correspondent |  |  10 Apr 2012

Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal on Tuesday said that IT and electronics manufacturing policy is likely to be launched in May.

Addressing the media on the occasion of the launch of Airtel’s 4G services in Kolkata, he said, “Hopefully the telecom policy will be announced in May”.

On the success of 3G services in the country Sibal said that penetration of 3G services have not been as vast as 2G. He said that the lack of liquidity in the market to invest in the infrastructure and the devices required is responsible for this.

"We will give the environment to the industry to manufacture low cost quality smart phones. But it is the industry which has to deliver. This is the biggest challenge for the industry," he said.

"3G has not delivered because they paid such huge prices for the spectrum and there is no liquidity in the market for them to invest in the infrastructure and the devices to deliver 3G, for which 2G was successful and 3G was not successful."
