Ban on bulk SMSes causing 8 percent loss to operators: COAI
TT Correspondent |  |  21 Aug 2012

The government’s decision to impose a ban on the bulk SMSes may result in loss to the telecom operators. According to the industry lobby COAI, the limit of five SMSes per day may cause a loss of up to 8 percent to them.

The distorted messages and images in the past few days have led to the tension and panic in some of the cities in south India especially Bangalore. This has resulted in the mass exodus of the people of Northeast from these cities.

Keeping in view the situation the government on Friday had imposed a ban on bulk SMSes and MMSes for 15 days.

Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) Director General Rajan S Mathews said that SMS along with other data services constitutes 15 percent revenue for the operators. But the national security is of paramount importance to them.

"A ban of 15 days means they could lose around seven to eight per cent of revenue this month from this service alone," he said.

I wonder how?! I have already paid for the 300 sms per month scheme. Is the telecom company going refund any money to me?
