Telecom operators like BSNL, Tata Communications, Bharti Airtel, Idea Cellular, Reliance Communications have said that due to certain technical problems it would not be possible for them to block twitter traffic from certain states.
In the wake of the home minister direction for monitoring of the twitter traffic, the department of telecommunications (DoT) was requested to look at the technical feasibility of this. The home ministry order aimed at curbing the tension created by objectionable contents on the social media sites recently.
An official document quoted by PTI said, "Twitter Inc may be directed to all traffic emanating from addresses in the states assessed by the Central Intelligence Agencies to be sensitive in the current prevailing situation in Kerala, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh."
While Tata Communications expressed its inability to do so because of technical reasons as it does not allocate Internet Protocol Addresses to its customers on a state-wise basis, BSNL is opposed to the move saying it cannot block the website on circle basis. Rcom, Bharti Airtel and Idea cellular have given the similar reasons. |
