The supreme court on Tuesday cautioned the government that its plans to hold second round of 2G spectrum auction in March next year as reported by media can create complications.
The apex court said that the government has not specified any particular time in its affidavit.
“ We must tell you that it may lead to some complications”, the court said.
The court said that it has seen reports in media that the government is planning to hold a second round of auction for spectrum in March next year.
“Media reports could be wrong. But if it is true, then that will also lead to some complication", it said.
Last week the government’s decision for not putting the entire spectrum to auction held on November 12 came in for sharp criticism by the Supreme Court. The government put up 390 MHz for sale out of the 473 MHz vacated following the cancellation of licences.
“All spectrum after the cancellation of the licences must be auctioned. Why have you not auctioned all spectrum. Government is very casual in dealing with the matter”, Justice Singhvi had told senior counsel P.P. Rao who represented the government.
The just concluded 2G auction got dull response and was a sharp contrast to 2010 3G bidding which lasted more than one month. With auction failing to stretch beyond two days this time, the government managed to earn only Rs 9,407.64 crore.
Worse, only 101 of 144 blocks got bids with Delhi, Mumbai, Karnataka, Rajasthan circles going unsold. 3G Auctions in 2010 lasted for over a month, and fetched earned Rs 67,000 cr. |
