Inform subscribers about closure of services: TRAI to telcos

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has issued directions to those operators who have failed to win spectrum to inform their subscribers within 10 days about the closure of their services.  

These operators are Tata Teleservices, Videocon Telecommunications, Uninor and Sistema Shyam Teleservices. Uninor on Monday said that it would close its operations in Kolkata and West Bengal and inform its customers.

Trai in a statement said that these companies are required to submit a compliance report to it mentioning the date of discontinuation of services within the next 15 days.

It said Telecom operators, including Uninor and MTS, who have lost their licences will have to inform existing subscribers within 10 days about service discontinuation in circles where they have not won spectrum.

Only Tata Teleservices informed the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India ( Trai) that its services in Assam, the northeast and Jammu and Kashmir would stand terminated from the midnight of January 18, 2013.
