Telit’s M2M modules selected by Digicom SpA
TT Correspondent |  |  20 Dec 2012

Telit Wireless Solutions, a leading global vendor of high-quality machine-to-machine (M2M) modules and value-added services, has said that its M2M modules have been selected by Digicom SpA, a company specialized in the design and production of telecommunications and networking solutions, to optimize the operation ofTLOG, a meter reading device for gas, LPG, and water.

Digicom adopted Telit’s ATEX certified variant of the GE864-QUAD module to integrate it into TLOG, the company’s leading solution for remote control and telemetry applications for gas, LPG and water. The device measures consumption pulses from meters, through pulse-receivers and an 868MHz radio transceiver and sends the data via SMS or GSM/GPRS, TCP/IP connection. It can read directly up to 2 counters equipped with pulse emitters and can be completely remote configured and managed to guarantee maximum flexibility and investment savings. The configuration of data transmission can be set from daily to monthly with readings stored into local memory. Thanks to special connectors for level gauge and counters, the T-LOG can be very easily installed and used.

Gateway functionality is provided by Telit’s GE864-QUAD ATEX, the extra-rugged member of the GE864 product family which incorporates quad-band functionality, RoHS compliance, as well as low power consumption. Integration of the GE864-QUAD ATEX, a module meeting the stringent requirements of Europe’s ATEX directive, was necessary because of use in potentially explosive environments where Digicom’s products operate.ATEX, a European directive on equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres (94/9/EC) was enacted March 1st 1996 and is also referred to as the 'ATEX' Directive ('ATmospheres EXplosibles') or ATEX 95.

Application of the GE864-QUAD ATEX to Digicom’s TLOG is expected to reduce consumption by 20%, due to higher reliability and an increase in connection stability estimated at 30%. The GE864-QUAD ATEX module allows more accurate billing from real-time consumption information, reduction in delays for notification of anomalies, and significant cost savings in maintenance personnel.

Telit technology, together with Digicom’s knowhow provide optimized management of meter reading and “smart” control of consumption, particularly important when considering the criticality of avoiding water waste. As water is a key driver of economic and social development and maintains the integrity of the natural environment, a coordinated action that includes the interests of diverse stakeholders is needed, as the deployment of smart water meters.

Dominikus Hierl, Chief Marketing Officer at Telit Wireless Solutions, explains: “The smart metering sector is one of our core strategic markets from where we are seeing very high demand for M2M solutions. We are delighted that, with our GE864-QUAD ATEXmodule, we are able to make an important contribution to help solution providers such as Digicom create and manage their M2M applications reducing total-cost-of–ownership (TCO) while ensuring highest quality and reliability”.
