Airtel, SingTel, Axiata, Telenor bidding for licence in Myanmar
TT Correspondent |  |  29 Jan 2013

India’s leading telecom operator Bharti Airtel is participating in the bid for licence in Myanmar, according to reports. Before this Myanmar did allow any foreign player to operate from its soil.

Along with Airtel other companies who are in the fray are- SingTel, Singapore’s ST Telemedia,  Malaysis’s Axiata and Norway's Telenor. Airtel already has its presence in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Myanmar has a vast potential for telecommunication expansion, Hindu Business Line reports.

Myanmar is planning to provide access of telecommunications to nearly 80 percent of the country in the next three years and telecom operators had to submit their bid by Jan 25 for two licences which will be issue for 20 years. The process is likely to be completed by June this year.

Myanmar has 5.44 million mobile-phone subscribers as of December 2012 with a very low penetration. The region has remained untapped so far.
