Ninety-one members of an international telecom scam including 59 women have been held in China for duping people on phone, according to Peoples Daily.
The ring which operated from as many 106 locations in main land China, and many south- east Asian countries like Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Laos and Singapore got jail term ranging from 18 months to eight years.
As per their modus operandi, these convicts would call the people, mostly elderly and threaten the make details of the bank transactions public and other personal details if they did not transfer money to “safer accounts”. They would pretend to be employees of China Telecom or local judicial personnel, the report said.
The report said that the fraud committed by them has fleeced people of 220 million yuan (US$35.3 million) from March to June 2011.
