British teens suffering in silence on Facebook, Twitter; 19 year olds more vulnerable than girls
TT Correspondent |  |  18 Mar 2013

Has the UK become the trolled nation with over 85 percent of 19 year old men becoming the frequent target of abuses, online bullying or trolling on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. The interesting fact reflected in the research that they are more vulnerable than girls.

“87% of those who reported experiencing online bullying or trolling said they had experienced it on Facebook, making it the top social network or service where it occurs” the survey said.

While Facebook tops the list of sites proving space for abusing and bullying, other followed in that order- 19% Twitter, 13% BBM (BlackBerry Messenger), 9% Ask.fm, 8% Bebo, 4% Whatsapp

The most appalling part of the new Knowthenet.org.uk Trolled Nation study is that most of these teenagers are taking it lying down without reporting the incidents to their parents.

“Only just over a third (37%) who experienced online bullying or trolling have ever reported it to the social network”, the study says.

It goes on to say that while 19 year olds are the most affected, 2 in 3 teens have experienced trolling or online bullying, hardly any would turn to parents (17%) or teachers (1%) for support as their first reaction.

This is happening despite the fact that many sites are offering them the opportunity to use one click abuse reporting as most teens believe that it is not going to make things change. Most of them sulk that no action would ever be taken against the culprits.

“Whilst some might expect girls to be more vulnerable online, this study shows that older boys are more at risk from trolling and cyber bullying. Many boys feel under pressure to demonstrate their bravado, particularly on the web, but this attitude and male deficiency in coping strategies can make them more vulnerable and open to trolling. Online bullying can have a massive impact on older male teenagers at a time when they are finding their identities. Suicide rates are particularly high amongst this demographic, so it’s worrying to hear that teenagers on the whole are choosing to deal with internet abuse themselves rather than speaking to parents or teachers for help”, said Arthur Cassidy, Psychologist and knowthenet.org.uk trolling expert.

They abusers have even spared Facebook memorial page as 21% of teenagers have either experienced or witnessed offensive comments here

“Shockingly, trolling and bullying online isn’t limited to just generic insulting posts” it said.

The report says that this giving tough time to the parents who feel distressed and frustrated that “children spend so much time absorbed with their smartphone or on social networks”.
