Singapore’s leading telco SingTel has supported Bharti Airtel following the special CBI court’s order asking Bharti Airtel chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal, Essar Group promoter Ravi Ruia, and Asim Ghosh, former CEO of Vodafone Essar to present before the court on April 11 in the additional spectrum allocation case.
SingTel which holds over 30 per cent stake in Bharti Airtel said that Mittal have always upheld and practised the highest standards of corporate governance in all aspects of the company’s operations, including the acquisition of spectrum.
“We reiterate that we have full faith in the company’s corporate governance standards under the leadership of Mittal” it said in statement.
Yesterday the special CBI court probing the 2G case summoned them after taking cognisance of a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) charge sheet filed against Bharti Airtel and others for alleged irregularities in the allocation of additional spectrum during the NDA regime.
The CBI in December 2012 had named former telecom secretary Shyamal Ghosh and three telecom firms, Bharti Cellular Ltd, Hutchison Max Pvt Ltd (now known as Vodafone India Ltd) and Sterling Cellular Ltd as accused in a chargesheet.
The court said that there are enough evidences against three who are in control of accused companies in the case.
SingTel said the court summons are in relation to additional spectrum awarded in 2002 / 2003 as per the policy of the Indian Government.
“The Indian Government has in fact stated both on the floor of Parliament and by affidavit in the court that the spectrum allocated was as per their policies’, SingTel said.
“We trust that due legal process in India will prevail and are confident that Bharti Airtel Ltd. And Mittal will be vindicated before the courts” it added.
