After spending eight years with the Finnish handset giant Nokia D Shivakumar, who headed company’s operations in India, West Asia and Africa finally decided to call it quits. He will continue with Nokia till June 30.
Shivakumar played an important role in taking the company to the top league after losing out to Apple and Samsung in the recent past. Before that BlackBerry also gave a stiff competition to Nokia. One more reason for the Nokia to lag behind in the race was the emergence of the low-cost phones with dual-SIM which Nokia come out with very late.
Currently based in Dubai, Shivakumar looks after struggling Nokia’s operations 90 countries. He has not revealed his future plans as yet.
In January 2013 the company showed great improvement in revenues on the strong sales of its Lumia series of phones which were recived well in India. Despite declining sales, India continues to be a big market for Nokia after China.
The development hits the Finnish handsets maker just when it seemed to be regaining credibility with the newly launched Lumia handsets.
Shivakumar, who till 2011 was the managing director, India region, was credited with taking the brand to a position of strength in a market ruthlessly competitive. P Balaji from Sony Mobile took his earlier position of VP and MD last July.
