The struggling Research In Motion Ltd. has risen above the expectations by selling about 1 million of its new BlackBerry 10 devices. The company is relying on the new platform to turn its fortunes around.
Rim reported an earning of $98 million, or 19 cents a share, compared with a loss of $ 125 million, or 24 cents a share, a year earlier.
It reported a fall in the revenues of 36 percent to $ 2.7 billion, from $ 4.2 billion compared to analysts expectations of $ 2.82 billion.
It sold 1 million Z10 phones, which were higher that analysts’ expectations of 915,000 units. But RIM lost about 3 million subscribers to end the quarter with 76 million.
Chief executive Thorsten Heins said he implemented numerous changes at the company over the past year and those changes have resulted in RIM returning to profitability.
The company also announced that co-founder Mike Lazaridis will retire as vice chairman and director.
