JPC Chairman PC Chacko has come in for sharp criticism from Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) for not asking the prime accused in the 2G case and the former telecom minister A Raja to depose before the panel.
Calling it a serious matter the party’s senior leader Yashwant Sinha alleged that the panel is trying to hide the truth. He said he proposes to write a letter to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Lok Sabha Speaker on this issue.
"I saw in my mail a letter from A Raja to Chacko which casts serious doubts about the JPC's intention and in that letter Raja says he has written three or four letters to Chacko and in his replies, the JPC Chairman just acknowledges his letters and said nothing about his coming before the panel as a witness," he said.
Interestingly, earlier this month Raja had refused to respond to the written query on the issue sent by the Chairman of Joint Parliament Committee PC Chacko saying that wants to personally depose before the panel.
Expressing surprise Raja in a letter to Chacko said when the purpose of the panel is to seek truth, then why it is reluctant to allow him depose personally.
"After all, the purpose of the JPC is to arrive at the truth of the matter, and my unique position to explain the policy and rationale of the government behind the issuance of UAS (telecom) licenses and grant of spectrum, as well as the sequence of events and the role of various individuals and institutions, cannot be overstated," he had said.
Raja had received a set of four questions from Chacko for his response. Raja, it may be recalled had writer to Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar on February 22, pleading that he be given an opportunity to give his version on the issue while deposing before the panel. Chacko had also received the copy of that letter.
Later, in response to the written questions of Joint Parliamentary Committee, raja had said that the prime minister Manmohan Singh and the then finance minister Pranab Mukherjee had full knowledge of policy decisions.
