Facebook it seems can never get away from the controversies. In the recent past it along with other social media cites got flak for inciting people against migrants in major cities of India, then two Mumbai girls were arrested for posting comments against the Shiv Sena activists, then there is horrifying news of selling of a newly born baby over Facebook.
And now former BJP ideologue K N Govindacharya’s petition in Delhi High Court has questioned social media sites for allowing children below 18 to open accounts. According to Indian laws children below 18 years of age can’t open account on social networking sites. Facbook allows 13 year olds to be its member.
HC has directed the government to file its response to the issue within 10 days and posted the matter for May 13.
"How can children below 18 years have an agreement with any of the social network sites including Facebook? The Union of India is directed to file an affidavit on the issue within 10 days," the bench said has been quoted by PTI as saying.
While seeking the verification of all existing users and future users on social media sites , Govindacharya argued children below 18 years of age opening an account following an agreement with these sites is the violation of the Indian Majority Act, the Indian Contract Act and also the Information and Technology Act.
