Like most of us would not, the 18-year-old Eesha Khare Indian-American could not believe that she would be the winner of Young Scientist Award for her invention of device that can charge a mobile handset in mere 20 seconds.
Eesha who is from Saratoga, California was given the award by the Intel Foundation. The super-capacitor device which is rectangular in shape can fit inside the cell phone. She said that this can charge the battery in 20-30- seconds.
She said that her device can last for 10,000 charge-recharge cycles. Normally conventional rechargeable batteries last for 1,000 cycles.
Talking to KPIX 5 she said that the device is an energy storage device which can hold a lot of energy in a small amount of volume.
She got $50,000 for inventing the device. She said that the sole inspiration for this invention was her own cell phone battery which would always die frequently. She said she would use the award money for pursuing her education at Harvard.
Eesha emerged winner after competing with 1,600 other finalists from more than 70 countries
