The department of telecom (DoT) has imposed a fresh penalty of Rs 1,263 crore for allegedly under-reporting revenues during financial years 2008-09 and 2010-11. Dot has issued a demand notice to Vodafone in this regard.
Vodafone is learnt to have been given 15 days to pay the penalty.
It is learnt that DoT has decided to go ahead with the notice after it discovered that procedural lapses and anomalies happened while reporting India revenues, forex gains, taxation and interest during the period mentioned above.
The company has faced penalties on count or the other in the recent past which also involves one-time spectrum charges. In February this year Vodafone was asked by DoT pay Rs 877 crore towards additional charges for airwaves between 2008 and 2012. Reliance Communications and Bharti Airtel were also served the notices.
The company is in dispute with the the government over Rs 11,200 crore tax liability case. The issue is related to its acquisition of Hutchison's stake in Hutchison-Essar in 2007.
Then there is 3G intra-circle roaming agreement with Airtel and Idea Cellular which has been termed illegal by Dot.
