Nokia Siemens in pact with MTS to introduce FDD LTE in Russia
TT Correspondent |  |  04 Jul 2013

Nokia Siemens Networks is extending its partnership with Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) by deploying Frequency Division Duplex, Long Term Evolution (FDD LTE) in the Moscow and Central Russia regions during the third quarter of 2013.

The operator utilizes its 2600 MHz and 800 MHz frequency bands for increased capacity, addressing the growing demand for mobile broadband services. Under the contract, Nokia Siemens Networks will be the sole supplier of FDD LTE radio access, IP core network equipment and services.

“As a leading telecommunications group in Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), we have been at the forefront of technology and innovation,” said Andrey Ushatskiy, vice-president and CTO of MTS Group. “In 2012, we launched our TDD LTE network. By adding FDD LTE, we will be able to take full advantage of our spectrum allocation, provide higher capacity, and deliver the superior data experience that our subscribers deserve. Nokia Siemens Networks was our obvious choice for the project, given our relationship of trust and its sound expertise in mobile broadband”.

Under the three-year contract, Nokia Siemens Networks will upgrade the existing Single RAN platform, based on high-capacity Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station. The multi-technology Single RAN solution enables easy upgrading of the existing radio network for a fast LTE rollout. Nokia Siemens Networks will also deploy its NetAct network management system for consolidated configuration, monitoring and network optimization. When providing the FDD LTE radio network, Nokia Siemens Networks enables IP Multimedia Subsystem improvement capabilities for voice evolution at MTS.

To support MTS in deploying a network with the highest quality possible, Nokia Siemens Networks will provide a full range of services, including network implementation, planning and optimization, care and system integration.

“We are totally committed to supporting MTS so it can deliver the most efficient LTE network possible and serve more subscribers with higher data rates,” said Kristina Tikhonova, head of Region East at Nokia Siemens Networks. “With unprecedented scalability and flexibility, our FDD LTE solution will allow MTS to evolve its network in a fast and cost-effective manner, meeting its ever-increasing coverage and capacity needs.”
