Data price war: RCom offers 3G data plans at 2G prices to trigger 3G adoption and data usage
TT Correspondent |  |  19 Jul 2013

After Airtel, Idea and Vodafone, RCom too has joined the data price race by offering new 3G data plans at 2G data prices.

Reliance Communications’ subscribers can now access 3G services at Rs 123 for 1 GB, Rs 246 for 2 GB and Rs 492 for 4 GB. New customers coming to the Reliance network through MNP will also be able to avail of 1 GB of 3G data free per month for two months.

The company has rolled out these low-priced 3G services nationally for its subscribers, both post-paid and pre-paid. .

The move is aimed at targeting 40% share of fast-growing smartphones market by tapping the fast-growing segment of smartphone and tablet users in the country.

The whole philosophy behind cutting data price by the telcos is democratization of data through aggressive and affordable pricing to improve sagging revenue.

For RCom the move will trigger a wave of 3G adoption in the country and give a fillip to the data usage and revenue growth across customer segments.

Gurdeep Singh, President and Chief Executive Officer, Wireless, Reliance Communications Limited, said: “By breaking the 3G entry barrier, we plan to bring about a behavioral change and take the benefits of quick data access to everyone and impact not just lives, but lifestyles as well.”

As far as the data price cut is concerned the ball was set rolling by Bharti Airtel which slashed  its 2G data usage charges in Punjab and Haryana by 80%  followed by Vodafone and Idea who lowered the 2G data price by 90%.

While Idea slashed rates in Tamil Nadu & Chennai, Karnataka, Kolkata, West Bengal, Assam, North East, Bihar, and Orissa. Its prepaid and postpaid subscribers can use data at just 2 paise/10 KB from July 1.

Vodafone India has chosen to lower 2G data rates in Karnataka, UP West and MPCG and will be rolled out nationally in phased manner.

Bharti Airtel also slashed 4G data charges by 31 percent to expand its fourth-generation wireless broadband services in Bangalore, Kolkata, Pune and Chandigarh.

Last month Tata DOCOMO, the unified telecom brand of Tata Teleservices on Tuesdays slashed its 2G and 3G data volume based charging (VBC) tariffs by 90 percent.
