LINE Corporation has announced that its free calling and messaging app LINE’s registered users in India have reached the 5 million mark, thanks to the aggressive ad campaign on TV channels. Globally the user base for the app has exceeded 200 million worldwide on July 21, 2013.
The company claimed that the milestone is achieved in around 3 weeks of its official India launch, making it one of the fastest growing apps in India.
LINE was launched in India on July 1st 2013 through a brand marketing campaign, including two very interesting television advertisements highlighting the ‘group voice chat’ and ‘sticker’ features.
"The app has been a success in the youth segment with its sticker and voice chat features becoming an instant hit and has been used extensively in all conversations happening through LINE app in India" LINE said.
Jun Masuda, Chief Strategy and Marketing Officer (CSMO) of LINE Corporation, said, “We are extremely happy with the response to our service in India. This is the testimony that we are in the right market with the right product and at the right time.
The company said that it is targeting 10 million users in India in a few months.
LINE was launched on June 23, 2011 as a group communications service available across multiple devices and network carriers. It achieved 150 million users worldwide on April 30, 2013, a mere 23 months after its release, and is continuing to expand globally, with young adults taking up a major proportion of its user base.
Most of the messaging apps these days are claiming high figures as far as the user base is concerned. Yesterday hike, a messaging platform claimed that it crossed over 5 million users in India April 2013, within 4 months of its launch in Dec, 2012.
Hike is a free cross-platform messaging application funded by Bharti SoftBank also said that in just 4 short months the app crossed 5M hike users and is now handling almost a billion messages a month.
But what is the major catalyst for growing popularity of these messaging apps. According to TelecomTiger’s findings, the chief reason is that people, especially youth use multiple messaging apps to cheat their partners.
“My phone supports multiple messaging apps and I have categorized my set of friends on them so that a particular friend does not suspect me “ said one of the user interviewed by the site.
