TT Correspondent |  |  26 Dec 2013

The telecom minister Kapil Sibal has said that low-cost tablet PC Aakash is his unfulfilled dream and he pursued this despite reluctance from some government departments.

While Sibal said that some departments did not support me but despite that we are bringing the Aakash,"

On its price he said that he wanted the price to be around 2,500 but that is without excise, without any of the other transportation costs and other things.

“So once you add those on I don't know what it may come to," he said.

In February this year Sibal on Monday revealed at a function that the government may procure the Aakask tablet at Rs 1500 per piece and distribute it to the students at Rs. 1,130 apiece. He said that he has already discussed the plan with Rajat Moona (Director General,C-DAC). The present cost of the tablet at which the government is purchasing it from Datawind is Rs. 2,263 apiece.

In December 2012 Kapil Sibal said that Aakash would be available to the students  at a price of Rs 1900 ($35).
