According to TechCrunch, the rumor spread through an anonymous Tumblr account, the owner of the account later posted that it was meant to be a joke and there were no intentions to do what happened. Mashable quoted the user as saying on Tumblr that he/she made up the story on the high-tech earbuds "while I was using the toilet and worrying about my blood pressure." The author decided to admit the truth after reading reports about Apple's recent health-related developments. The rumor became believable due to the patents Apple had filed for "earphones with health-sensors built-in."
The poster also claimed that iBeacon technology would be incorporated in them so that it would be easy to locate them if they went missing. The poster further explains through Tumblr that the intention was never to mislead people but instead to use the Secret app is an “outlet for comedy.”
The author of the prank did not provide his or her identity on Secret or Tumblr. The original Secret post became very popular, receiving 62 comments and nearly a thousand “hearts,” or likes, since it was shared online last week.
The person who wrote the original Secret item claimed authorship of a blog post that said the EarPod story was completely fake. |
