The combined desk-based and mobile PC market in India totalled nearly 1.9 million units in the first quarter of 2014, a 20.6 % decrease over the first quarter of 2013, according to Gartner, Inc.
“Consumers accounted for 47 % of total PC sales in the first quarter of 2014. In the absence of any government orders this quarter, the Indian PC market performed dismally, re-emphasizing the fact that sentiments were not very positive in the first quarter of 2014, and enterprises are deferring their purchases. However, with new government leadership, there is a positive sentiment both among the enterprises and consumers, and we expect markets to bounce back in the next two quarters”, said Vishal Tripathi, principal research analyst at Gartner.
White boxes (including parallel imports), which accounted for 39 % of the overall desktop market, declined 7 % in the first quarter of 2014 compared to the same period last year. In the first quarter, mobile PCs declined 32 % year-on-year due to a lack of government sales.
Dell increased its market share in 1Q14 (see Table 1) due to strong growth in notebooks which increased 43 % year-over-year. This growth primarily came from the consumer segment where Dell grew by 44 %.
