In a statement which appears to be made to suggest that the controversial 2G policy decisions were not made by him alone and others were also party to it, Union Communications Minister, A Raja said that all decisions were made with prior permission of the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh.
The Minister said that the Finance ministry was involved in the whole decision making process. “We have absolutely no disagreement with the Finance Ministry over the spectrum and licence fee. We are working in consultation with each other and all decisions have been taken with prior permission of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh," the minister quoted in an interview to PTI.
He said he had followed the policies and norms practiced by his predecessor Dayanidhi Maran wherein licences in 2007 were awarded at the price set up in 2001 i.e. Rs 1658 crore.
He suggested that while currently it may appear to be a loss, the government exchequer will gain about Rs 12,000 crore as revenue share and licence fees and this amount will double to Rs 24,000 crore once the country’s subscriber base reaches to 600 million following launch of operations by new entrants.
The Minister has been under fire over his 2G policy decisions. Reports claim to have pointed out discrepancies in his decision. Opposition has repeatedly been demanding his resignation. But with the current statement, it seems that the Minister wants to suggest that even the Finance Ministry and the PM were party to the decision and he alone is not to be blamed for it. |
