iPhone advert ad banned by UK’s advertising regulatory body
TT Bureau |  |  26 Nov 2008

iPhone 3G continues to be in news, for good or bad reasons. UK-based Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned a advert from Apple which promoted iPhone 3G as offering really fast wireless internet speeds and showed the handset downloading internet pages under a second.

The regulatory body upheld complaints by 17 subscribers who alleged that the promotions misled them into buying iPhone 3G.

Justifying its stand, Apple reasoned that comparison was made with iPhone’s earlier 2G model and the claims made in the advertisement were relative and not absolute. The company also said that the ad appeared with a text message reading ‘Network performance will vary by location’.
