Finnish handset maker Nokia said today that it would lay off 1,700 workers worldwide at several units spread across the coming months in order cut cost, as economic meltdown continue to beset its mobile handset sector.
“Nokia continues to seek savings in operational expenses, looking at all areas and activities across the company,” stated the company on its plans.
In addition to the mobile phone sector, head counts will be reduced in other sectors including devices and markets units as well, said Nokia spokeswoman Arja Suominen.
The world’s largest cell phone maker said it will engage in talks with the employees shortly, while the time period and smaller details remain undisclosed.
The announcement follows the company’s January announcement, to cut annual costs at its key handset unit alone by over $ 909.3 million so as to tackle the declining demands. |
