IBM eyes acquiring Sun Microsystems for $6.5 bn
TT Bureau |  |  18 Mar 2009

The global IT landscape particularly concerning the hardware domain is set for a dramatic change in market scenario, as International Business Machines Corp (IBM) is reported to be in talks with Sun Microsystems to acquire the latter for a value of $ 6.5 billion.

The development, reported by Wall Street Journal says that when compared to Sun Microsystems’s closing price of $ 4.97 a share on Tuesday, the IBM offer comes at a 100 percent premium.

The report says that IBM may be aiming to bolster its Internet, data storage, government and telecommunications business, post acquisition of Sun.

The same report claims that Sun Microsystems has approached some technology companies for acquisition. HP is reported to have declined such a proposition.

The report also cautions that while the sources close to the two companies confirm the development, it may not necessarily lead to any final transaction.
