Huawei Technologies has outbid rival bidders to win a controlling stake in China Unicom’s WCDMA card procurement.

The Chinese telecom gear maker said it has acquired 44 percent in China Unicom''s contract.

The biddings were first initiated by China Unicom in April and will be followed by the bids for mobile phone procurement at the month end.

China Unicom is primed to commence its 3G trial commercial services in 55 Chinese cities on May 17. A total of RMB 110 billion will be invested in the network during this year, up 56% from RMB 70.49 billion in 2008.

Out of the total investment, 35 percent will be committed to the WCDMA network construction.
