India’s telecom sector to contribute the most to govt exchequer
TT Correspondent |  New Delhi |  30 Apr 2009

India’s telecom sector is set to contribute as much as Rs 13,000 crore to the government in form of licence fees and spectrum charges for the fiscal year 2008-09.

Indian operators have collectively notched up Rs 1.25 lakh crore as revenues during the mentioned fiscal. The adjusted gross revenue comes out to be Rs 95,000 crore. And the DoT expects to get 12% of this amount which roughly comes out to Rs 13,000 crore.

The 12 % figures includes licence renewal fee in the range of 6-10 % as well as annual spectrum charges.

The figure of Rs 13,000 crore is the highest contribution by any sector to the government. It comes second only to the contribution from tax.

The new fiscal should also ring in health revenues with in all likelihood the spectrum auctioning of 3G and WiMAX services set to take place.
