Govt defers FDI proposal of Unitech and ByCell citing security reasons
TT Correspondent |  New Delhi |  19 Aug 2009

Unitech Wireless will have to wait longer to get formal approvals before launching its pan-India services. The government o Tuesday deferred foreign investment proposals of the firm along with ByCell linking it with security concerns.

IANS reports that the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) deferred approval to Unitech on grounds of security concerns raised by some government agencies over Telenor’s investment in the firm. Telenor has major operations in Pakistan. It also has majority stake of 67.25 % in Unitech.  Telenor is additionally present in Bangladesh through its stake in Grameenphone.

For ByCell the FIPB deferred the grant as the Home Ministry had recently withdrawn security clearances to the firm on ground of lack of clarity of source of investment. ByCell is set to receive the licence amount paid by it to the government.
