Alcatel-Lucent joins EU Code of Conduct on Energy Consumption of Broadband Equipment
TT Correspondent |  New Delhi |  05 Oct 2009

Building on its commitment to improve the energy efficiency of its key products, Paris-based Alcatel-Lucent on Thursday signed up as an endorser of the European Union’s Code of Conduct on Energy Consumption of Broadband Equipment.

As an endorser of the Code of Conduct, Alcatel-Lucent will make all reasonable efforts to adhere to the principles stated in the Code of Conduct (version 3 - 2008) for the broadband communications equipment it is developing for communications services providers and enterprises without compromising on the service reliability and quality levels.

“A key component of our program is to build smarter, eco-sustainable networks for them, while helping them reduce their total cost of ownership. We applaud the signatories of this code of conduct because we support the industry’s efforts to become more energy efficient. We know the communications industry through the development of innovative communications applications will play a critical role in enabling all industries to reduce their carbon footprint,” said James Watt, Chief Technology Officer, Alcatel-Lucent Carrier Group.

Most importantly, the Code of Conduct commands Alcatel-Lucent’s efforts to achieve the power consumption targets defined in the Code of Conduct for at least 90 percent of the total port count of new model items introduced.

Further, Alcatel-Lucent will annually offer the European Commission with information regarding the energy consumption of the broadband equipment included in the Code of Conduct, i.e. equipment deployed into service providers’ networks.

Alcatel-Lucent has agreed to provide information on certain equipment typically deployed at businesses or homes, such as DSL (digital subscriber line) terminals and optical networking terminals as well.
