TRAI says operators free to set rates for per second billing
TT Correspondent |  New Delhi |  09 Oct 2009

The regulator TRAI said on Thursday that while it is planning to make per second billing as a mandatory plan to be included in the tariffs of operators, there can be other offers also offered to subscribers with the final choice left to the subscribers.

The regulator also said that the operators are free to set rates for the per second billing and need not follow the 1 paise per second model.

“We are not looking at mandating per-second billing for the operators. We would float a consultation paper on it and decide only if the industry sees benefits in the system,” said Trai chairman JS Sarma.

“Operators can offer it along with other plans. It does not mean we will fix the tariff. When we make recommendation on this issue, we will keep in view the interest of operators as well as consumers,” added Sarma.
