Alcatel-Lucent CEO feels India’s growth story hampered by absence of 3G
TT Correspondent |  New Delhi |  17 Nov 2009

With repeated delays in setting things in place for entry of 3G services in India, Alcatel-Lucent CEO, Ben Verwaayen feels that absence of 3G services in the country is an issue.

In an interview to the Financial Times, the CEO said that Indian mobile consumers were increasingly moving from voice to other VAS.

"People are very selective about where they invest. It's different from the past. It's no longer use of words - words for voice, words for e-mails . . . it's much more diverse with video and -pictures and [so on]," he said to FT.

While the Indian companies were presently working on a low margin model, Verwaayen said that they need to adapt to changes in consumer behavior to keep such models in relevance.

"The world is moving very fast. This market is moving very fast," he said. "India is becoming instrumental around the world."
