Post World War II, the phenomenal economic rise recorded by Taiwan was aptly termed as the ‘Taiwan Miracle’. MediaTek, a Taiwan-based chipset manufacturing company is set to replicate the same success in its area of business.
The company specializing in designing fabless chipsets has come a long way since establishing itself in 1997 followed by listing in Taiwan, 2001. The fortunes for the company surged significantly in the last few years.
While leading chip designing firms including global biggies have registered almost stagnant growth in revenues for 2009, MediaTek has registered a 22% of revenue growth. Its ranking as per iSuppli’s research shot up from 24 to 15 among the world’s leading semiconductor players.
“We enter any business with the aim of gaining the leadership position in couple of years time. We are now ranked as number one fables chipset manufacturer in segments including mobile handsets, HD DTV, optical storage and DVD players,” says Mr. Grant Kuo, MD of MediaTek in an interaction with TelecomTiger.
Having started off with a product catering to GSM handsets, the firm has come a long way in extending its product line to include GPRS, multimedia, MPEG2/HDTV Decoder, DVD Recorded. WLAN. EDGE. TD-SCDMA, WCDMA, DVB-H, WiMAX terminals.
The company counts among its technological innovations, its systems-on-chip (SoC) competency which basically integrates different chips into a single chip thereby reducing the power consumption of terminals as well as space occupied by multiple chips enabling manufacturers to design sleek and thinner terminals including mobile handsets.
Microsoft has recently tied up with the firm to design a smartphone targeted towards the emerging markets.
The MD is counting significant contribution from the Indian handset players such as Spice, Karbonn, Micromax to name a few, to compliment its global growth.
“Like their global counterparts, there is a strong demand from Indian handset manufacturers to have access to solutions which reduce their time-to-market aspects. Our unique solutions coupled with the competitive offerings serve their need optimally, explains Mr. Kuo.
The company has close to 80 professionals in its India team which is mainly focused on R&D initiatives. Globally it has over 4,000 employees on its roll.
“We believe that the requirements of young, entertainment loving Indian consumer which also call for scope for customization will fuel a strong demand for solution like ours which as said earlier, reduce the time-to-market for manufacturers. This will keep us busy as far as the Indian market goes,” concludes Mr. Kuo. |
